Parque Nacional del Este

The Parque Nacional del Este is a national park located in Bayahibe that extends to the beaches of Saona Island.

This park is a 300-square-mile UNESCO World Heritage site that holds a variety of flora and fauna that are true to the region. Around this area you can find many different species of bottlenose dolphins, manatees, sea turtles and even the famous humpback whales. This park has been made a nature reserve since 1975 and was at one point a spiritual home of the native Taino Indians that inhabited the island before colonization. From March through November, this is also an important turtle sanctuary where endangered turtles go to lay eggs.
